Biogas Energy

Our main energy source—biogas—is transported in a dedicated, 8mile pipeline from a nearby landfill to fulfill up to 93% of our paper mill’s thermal energy needs. Not only is biogas a renewable energy, it reduces our CO2 emissions by 70,000 tons, or 23,400 compact cars, annually. Because of biogas, Sustana Enviro paper grades have less environmental impact compared to the North American industry average for uncoated virgin and 100% recycled papers.

What is biogas?

Biogas is garbage gas

Biogas comes from decomposing landfill organic waste that has been captured to prevent its release into the air. It is transported by pipeline to Sustana’s paper mill and used as thermal energy to produce paper instead of using traditional combustible fuels.

Facts About Biogas

Environmental reduction

Our paper production generates 70,000 fewer tons of CO2 annually than traditional fossil fuels, or the equivalent of 23,400 fewer compact cars on the road.

Transformation and composition

Biogas primarily consists of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4). When methane is burned to produce steam, it turns into CO2 and becomes 21 times less harmful to the atmosphere.

Renewable energy

Biogas is a local, renewable and widely available energy source that would be lost if not utilized.

Thermal energy

Biogas energy powers up to 93% of Sustana’s paper machines.

Sustana’s lightbulb moment

The inspiration to invest in biogas didn’t come from an engineer, scientist or technician. An office employee had the idea: After some digging confirmed the merits of using landfill biogas, he brought the idea to the management team. This led to a major investment that turned inspiration into a reality. The rest is history.

Better For...

Using biogas rather than fossil fuels, Sustana reduces annual CO2 emissions. Biogas is mainly carbon dioxide and methane: When methane burns to produce steam for papermaking it becomes CO2, which is 21 times less harmful to the atmosphere.

Our investment in biogas has boosted the local economy, which helps sustain the community – making it an important pillar for Sustana’s corporate social responsibility efforts. The initial idea to use biogas came from our workforce, proving that an engaged workforce makes for stronger community.

The landfill operator collects biogas – previously burned off, creating no value – and a utility operates the pipeline to Sustana. Both receive revenues as part of our supply chain. This cost-effective fuel also strengthens Sustana’s long-term competitiveness.
